The group consisting of Izar/Ego/Hrothulf is walking aimlessly for 40 days. Ego is physically adapting but troubled by the lack of purpose. Hrothulf is constantly looking behind and gripping his sword. Izar is confused and praying to the pantheon. They encounter a growling creature following them. Hrothulf attempts to challenge it with no success. Hrothulf scorches the earth with his plasma rifle. They try to split up but end up gathering around the Clew. Ego asks Klutch about her life and writes a message in the sand. They attempt to excavate a moat around the Clew but fail. Izar discovers a shell that interacts with them. Klutch tries to attack the Clew but is knocked back. They become frustrated with their situation and decide to choose a collective death. They use a shell to summon a sea monster and stack themselves on top of each other. Unfortunately, Ego and Izar don't die, so they find another way to end their lives. Darkness falls, and they find themselves back at the Clew without wounds, but Hiare is missing. The disembodied growl asks them, "Who do you say that I am?"
